Spent some time in the shop this weekend. I took one of the rough titanium forgings and started grinding. I got the blade profiled and the forge marks and oxidation off one side, and got about halfway through the other side.|
Then the repair job I'd done on the contact wheel to fix a quarter-inch by 3" gouge in it failed. I'm checking with other knifemakers to see if they have any suggestions for repairing the rubber, but I suspect I'm going to have to replace the wheel -- about $400 including shipping.
I have another grinder, but it has less power and isn't quite as solidly mounted as the borked one.
I have to say, having the big grinders in the shop instead of the garage is nice, but now I find myself contemplating redesigning the layout of the shop, which will mean moving several very large pieces of heavy iron. First things first, though -- I'm still moving equipment and stock from the garage to the shop.
