shop time [Dec. 5th, 2010|03:58 pm]
Doug Ayen
Spent some time in the shop this weekend. I took one of the rough titanium forgings and started grinding. I got the blade profiled and the forge marks and oxidation off one side, and got about halfway through the other side.

Then the repair job I'd done on the contact wheel to fix a quarter-inch by 3" gouge in it failed. I'm checking with other knifemakers to see if they have any suggestions for repairing the rubber, but I suspect I'm going to have to replace the wheel -- about $400 including shipping.

I have another grinder, but it has less power and isn't quite as solidly mounted as the borked one.

I have to say, having the big grinders in the shop instead of the garage is nice, but now I find myself contemplating redesigning the layout of the shop, which will mean moving several very large pieces of heavy iron. First things first, though -- I'm still moving equipment and stock from the garage to the shop.
