emergency preparedness checklist [Dec. 21st, 2008|04:01 pm]
Doug Ayen
power just went out, probably due to the windstorm going on outside. It did the flashy on/off thing at least four times before going out for good, so we've probably got a bunch of blown transformers, so it may be a while.

So,

Candles, check
Firewood, check
Potable water check (5 gallons.
backup generator and fuel check
deep-cycle marine battery and inverter, check
camp stove, check
flashlights/lantern check

ok, so long as this doesn't last more than a day or so, I think I'm good to go.

Update

Allegheney power says:
Click To View More Information BERRYVILLE VA 5 1 308
Cause Estimated Restoration Time
Line fuse blown
Overhead wire or equipment 12/21/2008 9:04:06 PM
Trouble on main line 12/21/2008 8:39:37 PM

So it should only be for a few hours.

yay.

You're one of the people i'd definitely trust to be good for more than a day or so :)

Yeah, but at that point I may well decide to start pulling breakers to isolate the house circuits from the grid, running the generator to get the well pump going enough to pull some significant water from the system, keep the freezers cold, and recharge the laptop and cell phone.

It's quiet now with all the machines off, and almost no traffic for some reason. I like quiet. Just the wind and the little squeaks and rustles that tell me I need to start trapping mice in the basement and attic again.

glad it came backl on so fast! Yeah that's about what P did after a while... nice to keep the essentials going (in opur case sump pump, freezers, hottub, server) ...trapping mice...as long as it's not for food? That comes later :P

Aaaaand power is back on.

Assuming it stays back up, that makes the repair time about 2 hours early. not bad.

You should add a Mosin Nagant and a couple of cans of ammunition to your list.

That's more along the lines of my "civilization has falled, and it can't get back up" checklist. Difference criteria -- trapping, hnting supplies, seed grains, wild foods, machine tools. That sort of thing.

What backup generator do you use? Is it powerful enough to keep the annealing oven running?
