Upcoming workshops [Jun. 1st, 2005|05:25 pm]
Doug Ayen
Ok, still haven't quite finished cleaning up the workshop, but it's time to start setting up the schedule for future workshop events.

Workshops I want to run in the next year:

Another tanto/hamon workshop for those who missed out on the first one (probably in early fall/late summer)
Habaki/seppa/tsuba making (late june?)
Iron smelting (tamahagane making) (July)
damascus making (patternwelding) (Too hot in August, probably October if I do the tanto/hamon workshop in Sept.)

I'm also going to try to hold at least one freeform open workshop a month.

Suggestions? Other feedback?

freeform open workshop? What kind of stuff are we talking about here? I have always wanted to explore sculpture through metalwork...

Open workshops

Open workshops are where people are welcome to come in and use the tools and resources of the workshop to work on their own projects. In the past, while there's been a lot of knifemaking, people have also worked on stuff for Pennsic, medieval cooking tools, and decorative items.

I've only recently been reading so forgive me if I'm asking a question that has already been answered: Do you post dates for workshops here? Or is there another site?

Given advance notice (so I can work it into my schedule), I'd love to attend some of your workshops. I'm particularly interested in the knife making and damascus workshop. However, I'd also be interested in a tool-making workshop, where demonstrations are given on how to make your own metal working tools.

Schedule, tools

I don't think I've ever explicitly stated it, but yes, I announce workshops here, as well as on a few mailing lists.

As for making metalworking tools, I have plans to make a new, hotter forge, a rolling mill, and need to install a baseplate for the power hammer. Certainly folk will be welcome to watch as I try to build tools that don't explode on me, but they will most likely be during the open workshops, and not a scheduled "build a forge" or "build a rolling mill" type event.
