new platen, chef's knife [Jul. 26th, 2004|11:34 am]
Doug Ayen
The new platen, I'm glad to report, works as advertised. I did the profiling and a bunch of the rough grinding on it over the weekend, and at about half an hours worth of heavy grinding, there's not even a scratch on the platen. The flatness of the ceramic is a boon as well -- without having to worry about wearing through the graphite material, I can really bear down on it, and still be sure of a flat flat flat grind.

The knife is coming along well -- I'll try to remember to post some pictures later. The only problem so far is that, as expected, it's heavy. As in about 2 lbs heavy -- this is more than some swords. I've got a substantial bit of grinding left to do, though, which will lighten it a bit, and if needs be I can remove some weight from the handle by hollowing it out a bit. Still, I like the heft of the piece, and suspect there'll be people who'd like the heavier version. I might also do some filework on the back of the blade to lighten it up a bit -- it's over a quarter inch thick near the handle, so there's plenty of material that can come off.
