more damascus made [Dec. 7th, 2005|02:34 pm]

Got up early (ok, 8:30) for a meeting, which turned out to be canceled. So, made myself a nice breakfast (fresh biscuits and gravy, fattening but yummy), and got to work.

First, made up a new batch of aggressive flux, 20 parts borax, 2 parts fluorspar, 2 parts boric acid, 1 part sal amoniac. Went to the shop, and welded up three more bars of the 3/8" cable, fullered it out to a nice width, and rolled it to the right thickness. Three bars in about 2 hours is still a bit slow, but I'm only working one piece at a time. Looks like I'm getting some delamination in spots during the rolling, probably should preheat the rollers before running the bars through, but 90%+ looks useable, and I can fix the few wonky bits during the final forging operations.

New cable should be here in a couple of days, which should be enough to get all the knives done that I want to for xmas.

sal amoniac is *not* a condiment [Dec. 7th, 2005|06:36 pm]

Bleah, somehow got sal amoniac on my dinner sandwich. Well, now I know what it tastes like. Salty (imagine that), but with a nasty aftertaste. Wonder how the transfer happened.
