Another year gone bye [Nov. 4th, 2005|03:29 pm]
Doug Ayen
Well, another year gone by, another birthday come and gone.

Didn't get as much accomplished this year as I'd hoped, but didn't do too badly, I guess.

Got a few knives done, learned quite a bit more about my craft, and even managed to host a handful of workshops. Not as many as I'd hoped, but a respectable half-dozen.

Currently, I'm getting the house ready for winter, cleaning up, stocking firewood, and so on. I've got a couple of projects ongoing -- I'm polishing a wakizashi by hand, and repolishing one of the first tantos I ever made.

The inscription on the tang says I made this one in 1998. it's got a bit of surface oxidation, and clearly I had little idea of what I was doing when I made and polished it. The lines are off, the sharpening angle is too small, the edge has little chips in it from where the steel just couldn't support its own weight and fell off (not knowing better, I had done a flat grind with about a 4 degree angle -- very sharp, but the edge is incredibly fragile, and even sitting on a shelf has caused damage.), but overall it's an OK knife -- about 1/8" thick, clear hamon, and enough meat left on it that the polishing will just make it a better knife. We'll see how that one turns out.

A big "Thank you" goes out to my dad, who sent me a big block of Madagascar ebony and a bundle of cocabola slabs. They are appreciated.

Next year? Well, for one I'd really like to get more into a production mode, but I've been saying that for years. I'd like to get the smelter running regularly, and to be able to reliably produce iron, but that's more for fun than anything else. Still need to get cracking on my xmas knife project, to start with I need to figure out what I'm doing this year. Sigh. Maybe gift certificates to knife world, given the lack of recent productivity.

Other than that? Not sure where I want to go from here. We'll have to see.
