New toys [Aug. 14th, 2005|04:53 pm]

Bought a few new toys yesterday at Iron Fever.

Well, first I got some felting needles at A.C.Moore so I can try to salvage that blanket refractory. A quick test last night showed that, yes, it looks like these will do the job, though at a cost of a lot of loose fibers floating around. I'll be doing this job outside, dressed appropriately (long sleeves, pants, belt-fed filter mask, gloves. This stuff is *itchy* when it gets on your skin.)

After that, I went with a friend (Hi, Anne) to Iron Fever, a machinists tool expo and related activities up in York, PA. I ran into several friends and acquaintences, and got a lot of inquiries about the Utilikilt. I also picked up some tooling: a few extra vacuum guages, as I seem to break them often; a flow meter for the smelter; some indexable carbide tooling bits that I'm going to be using for grooving and carving on knifeblades; and the cutest little steel square, about 1" on a side, which I'll be using for various knifemaking applications.

Oh, I also picked up a book on cruicible making (for the frangible crucible compacted powder metalurgy process I'm working on), and a stick of purpleheart that I'll use for a knifehandle once I get it stablized.

Overall, had a good time, and am looking forward to next year's Cabin Fever, which has significantly more vendors. Need more stuff!
