Hmm, it's been a week since I last updated this thing. If anyone is actually reading this, I finally got the cast off my arm, and have been given a green light to start smithing again. Since then (last Tuesday) I've been busy -- busy catching up on house related chores, not smithing.

Still, made it into the workshop this weekend for a few minutes, and managed to start moving some of the tools around to where I want them. First project to be worked on once I start doing this more regularly: the chef knife prototype. I have one blank mostly forged out using the power hammer; I am not sure I like the results, so I'm going to do another blank by hand and see if that's closer to what I want. I suspect the permanent solution will involve making a custom die for the hammer, one with a taper in it so I can forge bevels easier and smoother. 1/4" over 2" should do it.

Gah, I feel so lame about not getting much done in terms of knifemaking, but unless/until I go full time with it knifemaking has to come behind keeping the house and property up, work, and personal life. Still, I am looking forward to spending more time in the workshop.

Until tomorrow, keep the sparks flying.
