Bailing on Baitcon [Jun. 7th, 2012|01:12 pm]
Doug Ayen
I'm seriously thinking of just bailing on Baitcon this year.

Between worries about not being employed post-merger on July 1; not wanting to drive 20-24 hours, spend a weekend getting bit by bugs, soaked by rain, and generally putting up with discomfort; being short on vacation time; and generally not being able to think of a good reason to go, I'm just not seeing a compelling reason to bother.

The dewar still needs repair, which is more $$$ and somehow arranging to travel the 1.5 hours up to MD some workday to drop it off, and another day to pick it up -- either getting up really early and still getting in late, or taking the day off, either way it's just not likely to happen between now and the 20th.

My camping gear is a shambles, I haven't touched it since the last time I used it several years ago. Sure, I can get a cabin, but that still feels like cheating someone else out of shelter.

And, on the whole, I'm just not motivated to go. It feels like yet another fucking obligation that somehow I've picked up, that I go through with even though I hate it, because I'm supposed to.

So, bailing seems the best for me option. It's not like I'll be missed, I usually only talk to small set of people anyway, and my equipment is now just part of what's available, not the best way to freeze ice cream.

I've missed previous baitcons, and nobody has ever even asked why I wasn't there.

Anyway, if you're going, have fun.

I'm not going (cleaning out my mother's house, among other things), but I enjoyed talking to you when I saw you.

I'll miss you but if it isn't fun for you, I fully support you not going.
I've had years where I felt like that and pushed through it with very mixed results. Do what feels best to you.

I'm still debating going. On the one hand it's the last place I can really see some people. On the other, there is this large pile of "who really gives a fuck anyway?".

Maybe the problem is that to some people I am simply "convenient". As in it's nice to have CZ around, but as long as there's really no effort expended overall. Effort implies commitment, and who has time for that anymore?

So if it's convenient, then great. If not, then who cares. So why care?

You would be a reason to go for. It's good to see you.

And there you go.

I can totally understand your point of view, there. Hope you have a good weekend whether it's baitcon or doing smithy stuff or just whatever.

I'm not sure if I'll be there or for how long. (I have the advantage that it's doable as a long daytrip for me.)

I think if you don't want to go, you shouldn't go.

I'm vaguely considering trying to make it this year, seeing as for once it's not opposite something I'm committed to doing. But it's all so inconvenient. *sigh*

Your reasons sound something like my reasons for a whole lot of things I don't want to do, including Baitcon, alas.

But I like talking to you, and hope I'll see you somewhere sometime soon.
