Just a reminder, vote today (if there are local elections, that is -- which there are here in VA).

All those uncontested candidates are somewhat confusing. Does nobody but this one person want to be the Treasurer? The sheriff? The Commissioner of Revenue? Sure, it's a smallish town, but I know there are people out of work who have the time and who should have the incentive to run for office. And why are they all Republicans?

In Cow Hampshire, there a Town Report must be distributed before town elections. It includes the budget, which is the easiest way to see which town jobs are compensated (many are more or less volunteer) and how much. Usually, unless your population is 10K or up, most town jobs are part time and compensated at shy of $10/hr., once you figure out how much time it really takes to do even a mediocre job. I get $1000 for being Planning Board Chairman, which I might manage to do, in a slow year, in 100 hours (26 meetings, average 2 hr. plus minutes, agendas, talking to applicants etc.).
