designed to fail [Aug. 25th, 2009|08:24 pm]
Doug Ayen
A year ago, I bought a troy bronco string trimmer. I've used it a few times, it ran fine until tonight.

AFter poking at the bits, priming, and warming it up, the trimmer would still just stall out when full thottle was applied.

Now, in the gas tank there's a tube that goes from a weighted filter to the carburetor, made of plastic. In this case, a gasoline-soluble plastic. The tubing, when I checked it, had fallen apart, and when I pulled out a bit, it felt like jello, only not quite as strong.

I'm assuming some asshole decided to substitute an inferior component from the original spec, but it seems as likely nowadays that someone said "give me a tube that will last for the 90 day warranty, and maybe a few weeks longer." It's remotely possible someone specified a material that just couldn't hold up to its environment, but we've had gasoline-proof tubing for decades, so I can't excuse that either.

Now, I'm sure this is replaceable, but if the tubing in the gas tank is bad, what about the tubing from the primer, and the other components. I'd say this is the last time I buy from this manufacturer, but who the fuck knows who actually made this piece of crap? All it says is "made in China."

Crap like this just pisses me off, though. Whether from corporate greed or incompetence, this sort of crap is unacceptable -- but since I'm past the warranty, I guess I'm SOOL.

I'd call 'em anyway to vent my spleen.

I'm going to, and ask for replacement parts if they won't just replace the unit altogether. I'll probably get nothing, but if you don't ask, you certainly won't receive.

If not, I'm pretty sure I can find some nice gas resistant tubing at a hardware store. This isn't rocket science. (now, turning a truck turbo into an oxygen-enriched jet engine to heat a forge -- that's rocket science. and turbos are cheap on ebay right now.)

I'd call them, then the CSC. Leaking gas in a shed is not a funny thing, nor is a line giving way and spraying you with gas while using it.

Are you coming to Burgerfest this weekend?

I'd like to, when do things start again? A close friend is running the feast at an SCA event this Saturday right here in Berryville, but since there's a whole lot of court nonsense going on, I'm pretty sure I can squeeze both in. Of course, I'm not entirely sure when the feast is, either -- there doesn't seem to be a schedule posted.
