Got the first 2 xmas knives ground, the first from the cable damascus. Got a couple of nice swept small blades out of the first piece of stock. They both have some pitting and small cold shuts, but for a first effort I think they came out fine -- and it's not like these test pieces are going anywhere. Got a small abrasion from a belt oops, and a small burn from bouncing one of the hot knives off a knuckle, but no real harm done. It looks like the proof of concept is good, so I'll be working up the rest of the steel over the next couple of days and getting the production line started. Need to mix up some more flux, I think I like the boric acid/borax/florspar mix. It doesn't seem to foam up as much as pure borax, and so long as you're careful around the fumes it works pretty well. Pure borax certainly works, but I think I like the extra aggressiveness of the florspar, and the boric acid seems to help keep the flux sticky as the inherent moisture boils off.
